This book gets all the stars. Echo Brown, a young girl turned woman, spins this tale through remarkable story telling. At times my heart brok because she had to resort to making things magical to provide comfort in her own misfortunes. This book covers several hard topics: racism, sexuality, abuse, and gender identitifcation.
Beautifully written moving from prose to pure verse in the most realistic form this book was what every brown girl needs to experience at some part of her life. Through magical realism (although that isn’t my thing), the author manages to weave a tale that is funny, quirky, haunting, thrilling, and sometimes exhilerating at moments.
Black Girl Unlimited gave me all the feels and at times I was taken aback because even though there was a touch of magical realism, I still continued because I felt that it was needed in the character’s progression and growth through the novel. Have you ever heard of this book? Is it on your wishlist? If you have what did you think?
